Whitestone Historic Resources
The only landmarked property in Whitestone is the Hammerstein mansion "Wildflower" in Beechhurst.
This building, after years of mistreatment, arson and sketchy developers, was allowed to be subdivided
into condominiums, with additional housing constructed around the mansion, effectively obscuring it from
the public.
There are numerous historic buildings in Whitestone and its sub-neighborhoods Malba, Beechhurst and
Robinswood. Most areas which have historical and architectural significance are under tremendous
development pressures. One of the most cohesive areas are the residential blocks surrounding the
Whitestone Village commercial area. Many of these houses date from the mid to late-19th century and are
reasonably intact, with easily reversible facade treatments (vinyl/aluminum siding). There is no other part of
the 19th Council District that has this type of development and it should be protected and preserved for
generations to come.
